Many venues add late-night shows and special events on weekends, so it is worth checking schedules even after you make your initial plans.
Outdoor Things to Do

The Atlanta Beltline is a summer hub for walking, biking and neighborhood hopping, with trails connecting restaurants, murals, parks and patios across the city. Explore the Eastside Trail for easy access to favorites in Inman Park, Old Fourth Ward and Ponce City Market, then check out the expanding Southside Trail. PATH400 offers a scenic paved escape through Buckhead, with art installations, green space and an easy way to experience another part of Atlanta on foot or by bike.
Piedmont Park offers skyline views, shaded spots for picnics and plenty of space to relax or play. Atlanta Botanical Garden is especially vibrant in summer, with colorful seasonal blooms, the Canopy Walk, the Skyline Garden and popular evening events like Cocktails in the Garden which takes place every Thursday evening through Sept. 24.

Splash pads across the city are a go-to for families. Historic Fourth Ward Park’s Splash Pad along the Atlanta Beltline is one of the most popular, while Centennial Olympic Park’s Fountain of Rings offers an interactive water experience set to music in the heart of Downtown. For a classic Atlanta summer activity, head to the Chattahoochee River for a float trip that combines nature and adventure.
Food, Patios and Summer Flavors

Dining in Atlanta during the summer is as much about the atmosphere as it is about the food. Rooftop restaurants and bars in neighborhoods like Midtown and Buckhead offer skyline views and breezy evenings, with spots like St. Julep Rooftop Bar (located in Kimpton Sylvan Atlanta – Buckhead) and Spaceman (located in Hyatt Centric Buckhead Atlanta) pairing creative cocktails with sweeping city views and golden-hour vibes.
Along the Atlanta Beltline, patio dining creates a social, walkable experience where you can stop for drinks, small plates or a full meal. Barcelona Wine Bar is known for Spanish-style tapas and wine, while Glide Pizza offers a more casual option with creative New York–style slices topped with things like burrata, hot honey and local twists that reflect Atlanta’s flavor scene.
Food halls across the city make it easy for groups to mix and match flavors in one stop. Krog Street Market brings together everything from stacked deli sandwiches and gourmet burgers to fresh oysters and globally inspired street food. At Ponce City Market, you can find Southern comfort dishes, wood-fired pizza, tacos, ramen and craft desserts all under one roof, making it easy to build a meal that fits every craving. Chattahoochee Food Works adds even more variety, with options ranging from Korean fried chicken and sushi to Caribbean plates and vegan comfort food, all designed for a casual, come-as-you-are summer night.
No matter where you land, summer dining in Atlanta is all about lingering a little longer, trying something new and soaking in the city’s easygoing, patio-first energy.
Family-Friendly Summer Fun
Long summer days in Atlanta call for cool escapes and big adventures. From underwater worlds to up-close animal encounters and forest trails in the city, these family-friendly spots turn hot afternoons into something kids will not stop talking about.
Georgia Aquarium

Georgia Aquarium offers an unforgettable look at marine life, but what sets it apart is its sheer scale and rarity. It is one of the only places in the world where you can watch whale sharks swim overhead in a massive, tunnel-like habitat that feels more like stepping into the ocean than viewing a tank. Kids can move through distinct ecosystems, from vibrant coral reefs to chilly waters filled with beluga whales, all within a single visit. Live presentations bring energy to the experience, with dolphins leaping through choreographed routines and sea lions showcasing playful personalities while reinforcing conservation messages. In summer, the aquarium leans into extended hours and immersive programming, including evening Glow Nights that transform galleries with bioluminescent-inspired lighting and music, making it feel like an entirely different experience after dark. Daily from 4 p.m., May 29 through Aug. 9.
Zoo Atlanta

Zoo Atlanta stands out for its focus on conservation and close-up encounters you do not often find elsewhere. The zoo is home to one of the largest populations of great apes in North America, and watching a family of gorillas interact just a few feet away is a moment that sticks with kids long after the visit. The habitats are designed to feel immersive and natural, from the wide-open African Savanna with giraffes and zebras to shaded forest spaces that keep both animals and visitors comfortable in the summer heat. Younger kids gravitate toward the petting zoo and splash-friendly play areas, while older ones can catch enrichment sessions where animals solve puzzles or interact with new objects, offering a glimpse into their intelligence and behavior. Summer brings a more relaxed pace with extended evening hours during select nights, giving families a chance to explore when temperatures cool and animals are often more active.
Fernbank Museum of Natural History

Fernbank Museum of Natural History blends indoor discovery with one of the most unexpected outdoor experiences in the city. Inside, the Great Hall’s towering dinosaur skeletons immediately set the tone, giving kids a sense of scale that is hard to replicate elsewhere. Rotating exhibits keep things fresh, often diving deeper into prehistoric life or natural science in ways that feel interactive rather than static. Step outside and the experience shifts completely. Fernbank Forest is a rare old-growth forest right in the middle of Atlanta, with shaded trails, elevated walkways and quiet pockets that feel worlds away from the city. Summer programming connects the two environments, with guided nature walks, hands-on activities and opportunities to spot wildlife in real time. Kids can go from air-conditioned exhibits to exploring a living ecosystem within minutes, making it one of the few places where learning feels seamless across indoor and outdoor spaces.

Nightlife and After-Dark Experiences
When the sun goes down, Atlanta keeps the energy going. Rooftop lounges like SkyLounge and The Roof at Ponce City Market offer skyline views and a laid-back evening atmosphere, while seasonal outdoor movie nights pop up across the city at places like Atlantic Station.

For something more interactive, social gaming spots have taken over the nightlife scene. Puttshack brings a tech-driven twist to mini-golf with automatic scoring and high-energy courses, while Flight Club Atlanta turns darts into a fast-paced, multiplayer experience. The Painted Duck mixes vintage bowling with bocce and shuffleboard in a moody, speakeasy-style space that feels like a step back in time.

Newer additions are raising the bar even higher. F1 Arcade Atlanta delivers a high-speed, immersive racing experience with full-motion simulators that let you compete against friends while sipping cocktails between laps. Your 3rd Spot leans into social connection with dozens of games, rotating experiences and curated food and drink menus designed for groups to linger. For something a little different, Joystick Gamebar offers a nostalgic arcade vibe with classic games and creative cocktails, while 12 Cocktail Bar adds a more elevated, reservation-only experience where drinks are crafted with precision and a sense of occasion.
No matter how you plan it, summer nights in Atlanta are anything but routine, with rooftop views, playful competition and immersive experiences that make every evening feel a little unexpected.
